Sound Travel consists of Stephen Talley (guitar) and Carol Smith (keyboard/synthesizer). Stephen has a background in Hawaiian and Rock/Pop music, having grown up in Hawaii and been saturated in the Islands’ musical traditions. He discovered the music of The Ventures, Chet Atkins and others at an early age and after learning to play ukulele and guitar, developed his own covers of many popular songs. He started writing his own original music in 1976. Of Stephen's music, one fan wrote that Stephen "has discovered how to reach into the subtleties of the guitar and music itself" and find what transcends the mechanics, to evoke the Spirit in all of us through his artistry. Carol comes from a more classical musical background. As a child, she was exposed to great classical music by her mother, took piano lessons and sang in choirs. Later in life, she studied music theory and performed in a Community College early music group for 8 years, playing instruments such as recorder, viola da gamba, harp and psaltery. She has been writing music for most of her adult life. All of Sound Travel’s music is original. They have appeared all over the Northwest, including British Columbia. Sound Travel’s music could be described as New Age, World Music or Folk, but Stephen and Carol prefer to call it “Inner Dimensional” music. They employ interweaving melodies, harmonies and rhythms to create their unique compositions. Sound Travel’s music is evocative of time, place and emotion. Where you go on their musical current is up to you.
Merge Dualities: natural, textural nuance with the tight precision of technology; programmed trance loops against never-play-the-same-thing-once improvisation; experimental creation within the lineage of musics of the worlds people... UNIVERSE FUSION. My intention in creating music is to stimulate spiritual thought, feeling & action through sound. A sort of sonic parable: love, struggle, awe of the universe, the wonder of nature, represented with fantastic aural imagery to engage the listener within a transcendent experience. Vast, diverse and often hard to catagorize, the music combines a soulful emotional presence with often strangly unfamiliar stylings that gives you the impression of listening from another planet. Although I am primarily a wind player, I compose and perform on a wide variety of instuments and sound sources. I am an experimenter, and love to jam with others. I enjoy the recorded medium, likening it to a painters canvas. Conversely, my music always contains a high degree of improvisation, and I have performed for many years throughout the Spokane area. My name is David Thoeny.
I am the leading light (or "dark" if you will) of the musical group - More.
The name "More" is a suggestion of my Dad's. He told us kids years ago that if we ever formed a group we should call ourselves "More." As he put it, we were already being announced on the radio. (i.e. "Coming up next, Nat King Cole, Roger Miller, and ....... MORE.")
The members of More vary with the performance and availability. Past members include Mike O'Reilly, Shabria Karushkina, Fay Seiler, Peggy Gilbert, Andy Lovato, Bill Bunze, Jared Scheel, Mike Norman and myself. On April 10th all or none may appear with me, courtesy of their good will. However I have a pretty firm committment from Mike O'Reilly, Fay Seiler and Shabria Karushkina; at least for part of the performance.
The music genre is fairly eclectic. I have a strong North central Montana influence toward old time C&W and Nat King Cole. I have an Eastern Washington influence toward late 60s and early 70s Rock-n-Roll, with an overpowering urge to learn to do more saloon singer songs a la Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble`, etc. I have also written some original material that will be included in the set list. The songs I have written are sometimes strongly requested by people who have heard them before, so I suspect they aren't half bad. Some of the original songs are C&W and others are Rock-n-Roll, Caribbean or the like.
